1. The Importance of Aftercare
A tattoo is an open wound. Inadequate healing can lead to infection, premature fading, or unsatisfactory results. Proper aftercare is the client's responsibility and is an essential part of the final outcome of your tattoo.
Devarda.ink provides written aftercare instructions with every tattoo. This guide serves as general reference and does not replace the specific instructions provided by your artist on the day of your session.
2. Day One Care
2.1 After the Session Ends
- Leave the tattoo bandaged as instructed by your artist (typically 2–4 hours).
- Once removed, wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap using clean fingertips.
- Pat the area dry with a clean towel — do not rub.
- Allow the area to air dry naturally for 15–20 minutes before dressing in loose clothing.
2.2 Day One
- Wash the tattoo 2–3 times daily using the same method.
- After washing and drying, apply a thin layer of the recommended aftercare product.
- Leave the tattoo uncovered — do not bandage unless instructed otherwise.
- Wear loose clothing that does not adhere to the tattooed area.
3. Healing Process (Days 1–30)
3.1 Days 1–3 (Early Stage)
- The tattoo will appear swollen, red, and sensitive — this is normal.
- A clear membrane or plasma may form — do not peel or force it off.
- Wash 2–3 times daily and apply aftercare after each wash.
- Drink plenty of water to support the healing process.
3.2 Days 4–7 (Peeling Stage)
- The tattoo will begin to peel like a sunburn — this is normal.
- Do not pick or peel at the flaking skin — allow it to shed naturally.
- Peeling skin may itch — do not scratch.
- Continue washing and aftercare as instructed.
3.3 Weeks 2–4 (Final Healing)
- New skin will form beneath the peeling layer.
- The tattoo may appear dull or faded at this stage — this is normal.
- Skin will continue to regenerate and the tattoo will become clearer within 4–6 weeks.
- Continue using aftercare product until the skin feels normal.
4. What to Avoid
During the healing period (minimum 4 weeks), avoid:
- Soaking in water: swimming pools, bathtubs, hot tubs, and the ocean — only brief showers are permitted.
- Direct sunlight exposure: during healing and for 6 weeks after healing is complete.
- Friction: tight clothing, rubbing from physical activity, or contact with rough surfaces.
- Scratching or peeling: never scratch or pick at flaking skin.
- Harsh products: fragranced soaps, scrubs, exfoliants, or harsh skin products on the tattooed area.
- Excessive sweating: strenuous exercise that produces heavy sweating may delay healing.
5. Recommended Aftercare Products
Your Devarda.ink artist will recommend aftercare products suited to your skin type and tattoo. Recommended products typically include:
- Fragrance-free wash (antibacterial or unscented).
- Tattoo aftercare balm or lotion.
- Light moisturizer for dry skin.
Avoid using petroleum jelly or excessively oily products, as they can impede the healing process and affect ink retention.
6. Sun Protection
After the tattoo has fully healed (4–6 weeks), sun protection remains important to preserve the clarity and color of your tattoo. Ultraviolet exposure can:
- Fade ink faster than normal.
- Alter certain ink colors.
- Accelerate skin aging in the tattooed area.
Apply sunscreen with SPF 50+ whenever going outdoors, even after the tattoo has fully healed.
7. Warning Signs — Contact a Healthcare Professional
Contact a healthcare professional immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Significantly worsening pain after day 3.
- Green, yellow, or foul-smelling discharge from the tattooed area.
- Swelling that does not subside after 3–4 days.
- Red streaks extending from the tattooed area (sign of blood infection).
- Fever or chills.
- Allergic reaction — rash, excessive itching, or difficulty breathing.
Note: If you have a history of keloid scarring or specific skin conditions, inform your Devarda.ink artist before the session begins. These conditions may affect technique and aftercare instructions.
8. Additional Sessions and Touch-Ups
After the tattoo has fully healed (minimum 4–6 weeks), additional sessions may be scheduled if needed to:
- Add planned details or design elements.
- Adjust color or shading that is insufficient.
- Refine areas that have healed unevenly.
The cost of additional sessions will be communicated prior to scheduling. Additional sessions required due to inadequate aftercare are not the responsibility of Devarda.ink.
